The Medical Foundation is a human rights organisation that exists to enable survivors of torture and organised violence to engage in a healing process to assert their own human dignity and worth. Our concern for the health and well being of torture survivors and their families is directed towards providing medical and social care, practical assistance and psychological therapy. It is also our mission to document and raise public awareness about torture and its consequences.
The Medical Foundation relies heavily on the work of volunteer doctors who generously give of their time and skill to document evidence of torture for medico-legal reports. The evidence may be physical such as scars and joint deformities, psychological or both. These reports, regarded by the courts as expert witness reports are represented by clients to support their asylum claims. The work is demanding but can potentially make the difference between a client gaining asylum in the UK or not. Most of our doctors are GPs by training, and we also have specialists in psychiatry, paediatrics, gynaecology, ENT, general surgery and ophthalmology.
We are looking for Medical Practitioners with full GMC registration and at least 5 years clinical experience, GP training or specialist training on SpR or Consultant level. In addition it is essential that you have a commitment to human rights and the aims and values of the Medical Foundation, are interested in health care issues that affect torture survivors and other asylum seekers and refugees, are sensitive when communicating with people who have suffered trauma and loss, and are committed to ongoing training and development. We provide in house training in both the clinical issues and report-writing, and in addition we offer support, supervision, CPD with monthly lunchtime clinical meetings and a twice yearly full-day meeting and appraisal.
