Advocates for Survivors of Trauma and Torture (ASTT)

The Advocates for Survivors of Trauma and Torture (ASTT) is a group of physicians, psychologists, social workers, ancillary health care providers, and human rights advocates who have come together to find ways to help survivors of torture and trauma. A non-profit group, it works to alleviate the suffering of those who have immigrated to the United States after experiencing the horror and trauma of war and human rights abuses.

Amnesty International: Stamp Out Torture Campaign

The official website to Amnesty International's campaign to raise awareness about the use of torture worldwide. In preparation for the campaign, AI conducted a survey of its research files on 195 countries and territories covering the period 1997 to mid-2000. It revealed that AI has received reports of torture and ill-treatment inflicted by state agents in over 150 countries since 1997. In more than 70 torture or ill-treatment by state officials was widespread and in over 80 countries people reportedly died as a result.


Anti-slavery International

Anti-Slavery was set up in 1839 with the specific objective of ending slavery throughout the world. Anti-Slavery's work is divided among three teams: Programme, Communication and Information, enabling them to work effectively towards achieving their goal of a slave-free world.


Association of Visitors to Immigration Detainees (AVID)

AVID is the national umbrella charity for groups visiting immigration detainees. The groups which visit detainees are all independent and have different organisational structures and ways of working. AVID provides advice, runs training programmes and spreads good practice.

Asylum Aid

Asylum Aid is a charity which provides free advice, representation and personal support to refugees and asylum-seekers who have been forced to flee possible death, torture or imprisonment at the hands of undemocratic and tyrannical regimes. They also run an outreach advice service for those who cannot reach their offices such as disabled asylum-seekers, and a specialist service for children and families. As well as offering practical assistance, Asylum Aid also campaigns for the fair treatment of refugees and asylum-seekers in the United Kingdom.


Asylum Rights Campaign (ARC)

ARC was set up in 1993 in order to co-ordinate and facilitate campaigning efforts of a number of organisations in response to the government's legislative attempts to restrict the right to asylum and curtail rights and entitlements of people seeking asylum already in the UK. ARC functions as an information sharing network that informs the campaigning work of its members. It is also a forum for discussion with campaigning strategies in mind.

Over 95% of the content on this site is open to the public, including asylum seekers from any country and the lawyers or advocates who represent them.


Bail for Immigration Detainees (BID)

BID exists to provide a dedicated free bail service to immigration detainees. They also work to improve the access to bail for asylum seekers and migrants, to raise awareness of detention issues and offer training to solicitors.


BBC World Service Trust

The BBC World Service Trust is a non-profit-making charitable trust operating within the BBC. Its key role is to use media to promote learning and development and to build media expertise in developing countries. The Trust draws on the expertise within Bush House and the BBC as a whole.


Bijou Films

Bijou Films is a new production company which aims to make documentaries about transcultural experience and in particular the experience of refugees and asylum seekers.

The premier site for ethnic mionority issues it provides an information exchange for Asian, African and Caribbean community groups and organisations in the United Kingdom.

Canadian Centre for Victims of Torture (CCVT)

The CCVT is a non-profit, registered charitable organisation, founded by several Toronto doctors, lawyers and social service professionals associated with Amnesty International. Lawyers, social workers and community groups saw clients who were survivors of torture, often badly in need of treatment by doctors and other health professionals. Many of the victims were in the process of claiming refugee status in Canada. The doctors saw the need for specialised counselling for the social and legal problems faced by this particular client group.


Center for Victims of Torture (CVT)

The Center for Victims of Torture is a private, non-profit organisation founded in Minnesota (USA) in 1985 to provide direct care to survivors of politically-motivated torture and members of their families. CVT, the first organisation of its kind in the United States, has pioneered a comprehensive assessment and care program. In recent years the Center expanded its work in research, training, and public policy initiatives designed to create new resources for torture survivors worldwide and new allies in the campaign to end the use of torture.


Centrum 45 (WWWII/Holocaust)

Centrum '45, (Dutch for "Centre '45" ) founded in 1973, is the national centre for medical-psychological treatment for members of the resistance and victims of war and organized violence. In order to realise its aims Centrum '45 offers a broad range of therapies.


Charter88

Charter88 is the independent campaign for a modern and fair democracy. It's aim is governmental reform with the specific goals of creating political institutions which are just, open and accountable and in creating a culture which protects individual rights, encourages responsibility and values the participation of every citizen. Charter88 has no affiliation to any political party. The movement has grown from the original Charter published in 1988 with 348 signatures to the over 80,000 people who have added their names.


Christians Against Torture

Christians Against Torture (CAT) is a growing voluntary human-rights organisation, affiliated to Amnesty International and working 'under the umbrella' of Cytun (the Council of Churches in Wales) in Wales and affiliated to FiACAT. They reach over 1000 people through their mailing list. They campaign on behalf of "adopted" political prisoners or issues, publishing details of these campaigns through "Action Sheets" with updates appearing in their newsletters.


Commission for Racial Equality

The Commission for Racial Equality works in partnership with individuals and organisations for a fair and just society which values diversity and gives everyone an equal chance to work, learn and live free from discrimination, prejudice and racism.

Committee to Defend Asylum Seekers

The Committee to Defend Asylum Seekers demands asylum seekers have the right to work; asylum seekers have income support; abolition of detention centres; scrap the voucher system; an end to dispersal; full legal rights and representation; and scrap the Asylum and Immigration Act.


Community Fund (National Lottery Charities Board)

Community Fund is the operating name of the National Lottery Charities Board, the independent organisation set up by Parliament in 1994 to distribute money raised by the National Lottery to support charities and voluntary and community groups throughout the UK and to UK agencies working abroad. Their main aim is to help meet the needs of those at greatest disadvantage in society and to improve the quality of life in the community. Community Fund supports our overseas projects and have contributed to our Under-One-Roof capital appeal.
