Tricycle benefit May 18th
Venue: Tricycle Theatre, London An enquiry into the use of torture, with Vanessa Redgrave, Clive Stafford-Smith & Philippe Sands
At a time when government leaders, politicians, academics and lawyers are being called to account over their views on the use of torture, the Tricycle Theatre in London will host an enquiry with some of the most influential human rights figures of today.
Devised by Nicolas Kent, Vanessa Redgrave and Philipps Sands, ‘Torture Team: The people who brought cruelty and criminality to Guantánamo' will explore the boundaries between legitimate investigative tools deployed by governments like the US, and criminal abuse.
The event will also feature contributions from Joanna Lumley, Bill Hoyland, Clive Stafford-Smith, Paul Bhattarchargee and Alex Jennings.
It has been produced to coincide with the publication of Philippe Sands' new book ‘Torture Team'. The book, which traces a direct line of responsibility between the abuses in Guantánamo to senior aides in the US administration and reveals the influence of torture as entertainment on people working at the controversial camp, was written with the help of the Medical Foundation. Sands worked alongside the MF in part of his investigation into whether the treatment meted out against Guantánamo detainees amounted to torture.
All proceeds from the evening will go to the MF and Reprieve.
Doors open at 7.30pm. Tickets £50, allocated seats £75.
